I’ve been trying out our new Co-Pilot childs bike seat that arrived the other day. Originally it was bought with the sole intention of using it in our cornish bike hire business but my wife and I have a 16 month old son so it seems a shame not to use it once or twice ourselves!
I have to say I’m impressed. After a half hour of Ikea style self-assembly hell it stood on top of my bike and is incredibly sturdy. I’d been warned off the child’s seats that sit on the frame in front of the cyclist as they are too cumbersome and can be quite hard to see around – you can’t see your front wheel at all with a frame mounted seat.
I’m glad I heeded the warnings. When my son sits on the back admittedly his view of the world isn’t as good but he is safe and he doesn’t get a face full of dust and insects as we cycle along. Also, because of the high sides on the seat should I fall then he is still cocooned in a padded plastic shell – very reassuring.
Finally there is a bar that is primarily to add strength, give the child something to hold on to and keep them safely in the bike seat. Inevitably though after an hour in the saddle our son is asleep and leaning against it as we trundle down the Cornish lanes and cycle trails!
The Co-Pilot Taxi Bike Seat is available for hire from £5 per day.
